“When the quarantine began back in March, so many of us were glued to our TVs, binge-watching the Netflix series “Tiger King.” As soon as I watched the first episode, I knew Freeland needed to play a part in this important conversation. Regardless of the drama in the series, the fact remains that there are more tigers living in captivity here in the US than there are in the world who live in the wild. We have rounded up experts across the country who focus on tigers in captivity, including Carole Baskin herself, and lawyer Carney Anne Nasser who pitched wildlife trafficking against “Tiger King” Joe Exotic. Renowned NatGeo journalist duo Sharon Guynup and Steve Winter who broke the story about tigers in captivity in America will also be joining, as well as experts Dan Ashe and Carson Baylak.” – Dawn Borchardt, Festival Producer
Freeland has a history of investigating, tracking down, and breaking up trafficking rings, and works with a unit actually called “King of Tigers” in Thailand who do just that. Freeland also has trained units in Russia, parts of Africa, and throughout Southeast Asia who are going after poachers. From reversing the decline of the Siberian tiger to saving the endangered Indochinese tiger from extinction, Freeland’s experts have been protecting tigers in the wild for decades.
We recommend reading Sharon Guynup and Steve Winter’s exposé in NatGeo “Captive tigers in the U.S. outnumber those in the wild.”
